AGM and EFB Battery Replacement

The frequent stops and starts of the engine, combined with increased energy consumption resulting from using comfort applications such as seat heating, navigation systems, etc., pose complex challenges for start-stop batteries. For this reason, automobile manufacturers have developed intelligent battery energy management (BEM) systems, which use sensors to monitor the vehicle battery’s condition. These devices help ensure extended service life, despite the heavy workload the battery must endure.

 

These are vehicles with START & STOP systems, which means a greater number of stops and starts. Vehicles that also have a greater number of accessories and peripherals that consume energy. TV screens or tablets, heated seats, built-in refrigerators, etc. All of this results in much higher consumption. That is why vehicle manufacturers have developed specific systems for energy management in combustion vehicles.

These battery management systems ensure that despite the high energy consumption that may occur during a journey, the batteries have a very long and effective service life in terms of performance.

Therefore, when an AGM or EFB battery is replaced in a vehicle, it must be registered in that system for optimal operation. And this process, although not complex, can sometimes be unfamiliar. Here we explain it.

 

It will depend on each vehicle brand. Because each vehicle manufacturer uses its own protocol for battery identification.

For example, some manufacturers have a self-learning system. And if you do not perform the battery registration process, the management system itself makes a comparison of the values the new battery has with those registered to make a correct balance.

Vehicles that typically have a self-learning system:

Abarth, Alfa Romeo, BMW, Chevrolet-Daewoo, Citroën, Dacia, Fiat, Honda, Lancia, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Peugeot, Renault, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota and Volvo.

There are other vehicles where you necessarily have to register the new battery. This procedure will vary according to each car brand and each battery. But it involves entering a 10-digit alphanumeric code. What is called the BEM Code.

If FQS is not available in the manufacturer list, “unknown” should be selected, followed by the specific battery information.
And there are also other vehicles that combine the 2 previous systems. The most common brands that combine the 2 systems are Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Lexus, Nissan, Opel, Porsche, Smart and Vauxhall. Therefore, it will be the user or the battery chosen that determines how to proceed with battery recognition in the system.

CONCLUSION

If we install a high-quality AGM or EFB battery, such as FQS Battery batteries, even if a BEM code is not entered, we will not generate any type of safety risk. The new battery will not suffer overcharging or excessive wear. And much less will it cause failures in the vehicle’s electronic system or other components.

Therefore, installing an AGM or EFB battery with a BEM code instead of choosing a battery without a BEM code only has the advantage of being recognized by the system from the first moment. But a battery without a BEM code will also offer exactly the same service once certain activation and battery recognition events occur.
