Batteries that save lives

At FQS Battery, we have recently witnessed an event that fills us with pride and serves as an inspiring example of solidarity. The company Rouco SURL, specialized in the comprehensive management of products and services for the automotive market in Cuba, made a generous donation on October 11 to the Miguel Alipio León Teaching Polyclinic in Aguada de Pasajeros, province of Cienfuegos.

Among the donated materials, a FQS145SHD.3 battery stands out, intended for the generator set that supplies the facility’s sanitary units and radiology service. Thanks to this contribution, 25 services that had been halted due to the lack of electrical supply have been reactivated. This includes the assisted ventilation room and X-ray services, both severely affected by constant power outages.

The solidarity shown by Rouco SURL has had an immediate and profound impact on the community. Their effort and altruism have made it possible for the polyclinic’s essential services to be operational again almost immediately.

Batteries for healthcare generator sets are essential to ensure the continuous operation of critical electrical systems in healthcare facilities such as hospitals and clinics. They are part of the generators’ backup system, ensuring their autonomy, immediate start-up, and the continuity of vital services.

Key aspects of these batteries:

Battery types:

  • Lead-acid: The most common in backup systems, including flooded (wet-cell) and sealed (VRLA, AGM, or gel) cells. They are known for their reliability in high-demand environments.
  • Lithium-ion: Lighter, with higher energy density and a longer service life. Although they are more expensive, they offer excellent reliability, especially in hospitals where energy requirements are higher and space is a critical factor.

Main functions:

  • Generator start-up: In the event of a power grid failure, the batteries supply the energy needed to start the generator set.
  • Initial power supply: Some batteries can cover the supply until the generator comes online.
  • Monitoring and control: In advanced systems, the batteries also power devices that manage automatic start-up and monitoring of the generator set.

Requirements in healthcare environments:

  • Reliability: Continuity of electrical supply is critical in hospitals and clinics, where a failure can affect vital equipment such as ventilators, infusion pumps, and patient monitoring systems.
  • Regulatory compliance: Batteries must comply with local and international regulations that set guidelines for backup systems in critical facilities.
  • Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the batteries are in good condition and ready to operate when needed. Periodic testing and timely replacement are crucial.
Using suitable and reliable batteries in generator sets is essential to ensure that healthcare centers operate without interruptions in emergency situations.
